Former factory Worker Finds Debt Solution By Starting His Own Kleeneze Business

A former factory worker who was struggling with £20,000 worth of debt has found a way out by starting his own business with Kleeneze.

Craig Austin (32) from Burnley started putting together his own team of distributors for Kleeneze18 months ago, after his credit card and bank loan debt got so out of control that his home was repossessed.

Craig said: “I’d been working in factories for nearly ten years, making minimum wage, and my debt had just grown and grown – I knew I had to do something to get back in control of my finances. Having our flat repossessed was the final push I needed to sort things out.

“My wife Vicky actually joined the company just after having our son in 2008 as a way to get back in shape – delivering catalogues and orders door to door meant she could get out and about and get some exercise while making a bit of extra money – so I started helping her out after work and on the weekends as a way of bringing in extra cash.

Thirteen years ago, Paul Tawn was feeling hopeless. An IT helpdesk assistant for a local council, he dreaded going into work every day where he’d be faced with huge amounts of stress for not very much reward.

Fast-forward to the current day and life is very different for Paul and his partner, Clare Bason. They now reside in a four-bedroomed detached house with stunning views of Cheshire and Wales. On Wednesday nights, they treat themselves to a film in their purpose built home cinema room. They take, on average, around five holidays a year and have a tidy sum tucked away in the bank.

In a nutshell, they have a great life. And it’s all thanks to Kleeneze.

“I spoke to someone recently that I used to work with at the council,” said Paul. “She’s waiting for redundancy and she’s just fed up with it all. I think that’s the situation for many across the UK at the moment.

After a few weeks on his state pension, Mike Harle realised he simply could not make ends meet.
“I was claiming £120 but I kept falling short,” says Mike, 71, from Edinburgh. “After a lifetime of work, I was sick of being stuck in the house.

His wife Jane, 65, a part-time carer, cannot believe the transformation.

Life changed for him when he retired four years ago, aged 67, after the company he worked for as an electrical engineer went into liquidation.

“I lived off my savings until the beginning of this year and then started to claim my pension. It was a shock.”

Families nearly £900 short

Families will be nearly £900 worse off this year after the biggest squeeze on living standards since the 1870s.

Soaring energy, food and petrol prices have massively outpaced increases in household incomes over the past year.
Roger Bootle, a leading economist and former Government adviser, says inflation is likely to go above 5 per cent - well ahead of the 2.8 per cent growth in wages.

The resulting gap would see the disposable income of the average household fall by £858 this year.

'Increases in areas like energy, food and petrol are having a really dramatic impact on household budgets,' said Mr Bootle.

'The increase in the cost of energy means inflation is likely to reach a higher peak than previously forecast. I don't think we will see a return to growth in disposable incomes until the end of 2012.'

The adviser to Deloittes believes the official CPI measure of inflation could climb to 5.5 per cent this year. In May it was 4.5 per cent.

He said the decision by Scottish Power to increase its gas tariff by 19 per cent and electricity tariff by 10 per cent will make the situation worse because it will probably be copied by rivals.

Having a great business idea is only half the battle. You also need to be an effective leader. Even some of the most innovative entrepreneurs can be hindered by insecurity or impatience. What a difference a year makes!

In October 1997 we told you about John and Hazel Stephen from Kincardine in Fife.
They'd already turned a £50 loan from John's father into a £3.7 million turnover in only two years by selling Kleeneze household products.

In 13 months their running turnover has jumped to a whopping £11.5 million!
In other words, it's more than doubled.

John and Hazel have nothing but praise for the part that the Sunday Post has played.

"We had lots of phone calls and letters", recalls John. "Not just from people wanting to join the team, but also from those wanting to congratulate us on our success, which was great to hear."
Of the people who joined the Kleeneze team, some have gone on to carve a living out of it.

Says John, "One guy who called in after the article started off part-time, but packed in his car business to go full-time last December because he was doing so well with Kleeneze."

Now John reckons he and Hazel are on track to up their turnover by more than £9 million this year.
No mean feat for the couple who less than a decade ago had lost their business, their house and even half their furniture.

By 1990 John's 13-year career as a fisherman, sailing out of Peterhead and Mallaig was over because of the huge costs to refit his boat.

With their two young children, Carol (11) and James (9), they moved to Airth near Falkirk and it was there where they first heard about Kleeneze, the Bristol-based company established in 1923.
After borrowing money from John's dad they signed up with the company and dropped catalogues through letterboxes.

Over the years the couple have introduced all types into their team, from doctors and teachers to private detectives.

Collectors get between 21 and 37 percent commission, with John and Hazel picking up an over-ride.

The couple haven't splashed their profits on Ferraris or the like, but in the past year they've bought a powerful 4x4 car for Hazel and a go-kart for Son James.

On the top of that, they also treated themselves to three foreign family holidays.
John says, "It took guts to change direction after generations of fishing in the family, and that fear of change is something which holds a lot of people back."

"It's important to push yourself forward though. Always have goals to aim for. One of the mistakes we made at the beginning was making our goals too small. Now they're collosal."

KLEENEZE EASES BACK TO SCHOOL PROBLEMS FOR PRESSURED PARENTS

Nearly one in two parents in Britain have been forced to miss a key event at their child’s school because of work commitments, new research has revealed.

A total of 46 per cent of working parents had not been able to attend school functions such as sports days, school plays or parent-teacher evenings because they were unable to leave their office in time.

According to the poll of 1,000 parents, nearly one in ten had missed up to four key events at their child’s school in the past year. A third of parents had missed one school event and one in four had been unable to get to two school functions aimed at them.

The study found parents with jobs were under such pressure to work harder that many felt they were losing touch with their children. Nearly one in three (29 per cent) said work commitments meant they felt they were becoming distanced from their children.

“I started my Kleeneze business because being a mum of two, and having one child at school and one at pre-school, I wanted to find a way of earning an income around my children,” said Michaela Williams.

“The more I looked into trying to find employment, the more I realised that I was virtually unemployable. I wanted a job that I could work at from 9.30am to 2.30pm maximum, 3-5 days a week, probably increasing when my youngest daughter starts school in September. I wanted to have weekends off to spend as family time, and school holidays as I haven’t got cover for those either.

Most of us spend a significant proportion of our waking hours at work, so no one wants to be stuck in an uninspiring or stressful role. While even the most satisfied employee can have an off day, it may be heartening to know that 48% of Brits describe themselves as fulfilled at work and almost two thirds have had a job that they genuinely loved at some point in their lives.

However, that still leaves over half the population who aren't happy with their professional situation.
It's unlikely that any job will be 100% perfect, but if you live for the weekends and then spend Sunday in dreaded anticipation of the coming week then now might be the time to look for a more rewarding position.

The main consideration is whether your current level of dissatisfaction is the result of temporary circumstances -- either of a personal nature or within your organisation -- or a sign of deeper problems that can only be fixed by a fresh start in a new company.

If you're still unsure whether it's better to stay put or jump ship then the check list below might come in handy -- if you find yourself nodding in recognition of three or more of these points then it could be time for a change:

1) The 80-20 rule applies for all the wrong reasons
The 80-20 principle was introduced as an economic theory in the early 20th century and has since been applied to many areas of life, such as diet. Nowadays it's an effective way to assess professional satisfaction, with the aim that you should be reasonably happy about 80% of the time you're at work. If the balance shifts and you spend most of your time feeling dissatisfied or frustrated then it's a clear indication that something is inherently wrong and major change is required.

2) You haven't had a pay rise in years
There are many factors to consider when assessing happiness at work - some of which are hard to measure -- but there's no doubting that money is a key issue and it's normal to expect your salary to increase over time.
The recent economic climate has forced numerous organisations to freeze pay rises and promotions until their financial situation improves. However, Home Learning College research shows that 10% of workers haven't had a pay rise in the past five years -- long before the recession caused companies to tighten the purse strings.
If this is ringing any bells then the question is whether your company is simply unable or unwilling to address the situation or whether your performance is lacking in some area. Either way, it's time to face the up to the problem and either fight for a pay rise or move into a new line of work that's better suited to your personality and skills.

3) The thought of promotion fills you with dread
Increasing responsibility is another sign of development and success at work, and many people are stimulated by the challenge of progressing to the next level in their career. However, if you're feeling bogged down and stressed by your current workload, or as though you're a round peg in a square hole, then the thought of additional accountability is sure to leave you cold. If this lack of desire for change is due to satisfaction with your current circumstances then there is no law that you need to strive for more seniority. When combined with a sense of inertia or feeling trapped in the wrong role then it's a warning signal that something isn't right.

4) Your work never excites or interests you
Money and promotions aside, most people prefer to be stimulated at work and boredom is often cited as a key reason for leaving a job. Doing the same role, day after day for several years, can become extremely tedious and leave you feeling jaded and in need of a new focus.
Consider when you last learnt something new at work: if you can't remember then it's time to get the old grey matter buzzing again. A change can be as good as a rest, but it's not always necessary to turn your life upside down to enjoy these benefits. Reasons for seeking out alternative employment
Debra Williams thought she had a job for life at British Gas. She worked as a personal administrative assistant to the regional sales manager and had been employed at the company for 17 years. But she was made redundant and forced to find another source of income. She worked alongside her husband in his construction business while being a stay at home mum for several years, but sadly the recession hit and the business went under.

My name is Stephen Evans from Llanelli. I joined on the Break Free option on 21/01/2011. I have been in various door to door sales businesses for the last 10 years after starting my working life as a roofer. My derisory £40 monthly diesel allowance meant I was putting most of my earnings into the fuel tank as I covered a wide area in South Wales seeking fresh customers as the re order rates were quite low. Sales had been slowing down as there was less money about for luxury food and the cold weather period hit me hard.

I got back in touch with Vic and Una just before Christmas as I knew they were doing very well in Kleeneze. I had a frustrated boss who would rant and rave despite my long hours and efforts. After some deliberation I decided to walk away from the food sales, literally, as I had to hand back the van, and get stuck into Kleeneze full-time. I was passed another 120 or so second hand catalogues when another local lady finished as her husband went back to work.

I went out on foot presenting them with a one day turnaround. It took a little while to get into a system and really follow the advice I was being given for although I was very confident dealing with customers I knew nothing about the Kleeneze business.

I do suffer with a form of dyslexia making ordering and sorting deliveries a lot slower than for most people but have found the personal support of Vic, Una and Hannah second to none and was really pleased to have been able to help Hannah hit the Gold level in period 3. They even helped drive me around to speed up my deliveries in the areas further away and gave me another trolley when my wheel fell off in Swiss Valley.

I realize that Kleeneze will take time to build to the top level of income I am seeking but I am willing to do whatever it takes over the next 5 years to get there. I also have my eyes firmly set on the trip to New York and a Mini Cooper.

I hope I am not the only Break Free to be there in NYC and look forward to laughing with others over the initial hiccups I made on the road to success

In working so hard to qualify for Hong Kong, Sakuntla and Richard found themselves in the running for the Harry Crook Trophy at the same time.

So, we’ve established that it’s not a happy time for the economy at the moment. We’re aware that there is a huge number of people who are looking for a way to pay their mortgages. It should be, by now, incredibly obvious that millions of people are currently unemployed and in great need of a regular income. And, if all of this has somehow managed to pass you by, you cannot have failed to notice that some of the biggest names in retail – Woolworths,
MFI, Zavvi and The Pier to name but a few – are no longer in existence.

When you factor all of this in, it stands to reason that when asking people if they want to start up their own business – in retail, no less – they may think you’re nuts. But they need to listen up – right now is the perfect time to start a business. It’s possible they could need a little more justification than that though!

History can and will repeat itself.

Throughout history, every recession has seen an unlikely outcome – the
emergence of some great entrepreneurs. Billionaires such as Bill Gates
and Richard Branson didn’t shy away from difficult times and Kleeneze
is no different.

Customers change their habits.

Most retail businesses were reporting significant downturns at the end
of last year. Here at Kleeneze, though, we were 11% up on the
previous December. When times are good, customers stick to what
they’re used to – regardless of expense. Now, customers will be
looking around for more cost-effective alternatives that will still provide
them with the service they need.

Tough times see out weak competition.

We aren’t in the expensive luxury retail market. We don’t sell high
priced items - our average price is £5-£6, which is why we will always
win hands down when money is tight. We know more people are
staying away from shops, but that’s not a problem - we take the shop
to them. We offer a unique, free, personal, home delivery service. Who
can compete with that?

No risk.

On the whole, people don’t like to take risks especially with their
finances. However, at a time when jobs are no longer safe and the job
market no longer thriving, that ‘risk’ just seems less risky. Now with the

weeks anyway.

Finding money

It may not be about redundancy or even earning extra cash for some.
Many people will be put off starting up their own business at the
moment, because of worries that the banks have cut back on their
lending. It’s a valid concern.

The average initial outlay for setting up a franchise is £45,400, though
again this varies dependent on the sector. Around half of franchisees
borrow money to set up – the average amount being £50,500.

average, this has now risen to 6 months, and will probably rise again.
You need to make sure you’re able to support, to nurture these people
that join us through redundancy. Most will be in shock and denial,
believing they will soon find a job, so they can’t spend too much time
on Kleeneze.

Recession has bitten, leading economists to predict a gloomy 2.1 per cent decline in the country’s gross domestic product for 2009*. But one sector that is bucking the trend is Direct Selling and, according to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), it is an industry accountable for £2billion of the UK’s economy per year, with over 70 million consumer transactions processed annually, showing no signs of slowing down.

• Analysis of government data has suggested that families at risk of repossession are now spending over 75% of their disposable income on mortgage payments (all the families affected had disposable incomes of £1,000 or less and mortgage payments up to £750.)

Doom, gloom and more doom. That’s pretty
much what every financial section in every
paper and on every website is screaming at
the moment. Thanks to the credit crunch,
headlines now cry Rise in UK firms forced to
close (BBC News, 7 April 2008), Credit crunch
‘could last years’ (The Guardian, 11 March
2008) and Loan sharks circle in the credit
crunch (The Times, 30 March, 2008).

that residential property in the UK is

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR

“My introduction to Kleeneze was all a bit
bizarre really. I was originally a prison officer and
introduced my brother, Mike, into the prison
service. Then, later, he returned the favour by
introducing me to Kleeneze (Mike and his wife
Amanda are now Silver Premier Executives). I
somehow think I had the better deal!
Mike was in Kleeneze for a month before I
joined. I already had experience with Network
Marketing and knew cataloguing worked – just
not to what extent. When Mike introduced me
to the business, I went into it for the
conventional reasons. I needed £50 extra to keep
repairs up on my old camper van! I thought,
that will be enough and didn’t think of taking it
any further.

I was advised from day one to go to the
meetings, so obediently off I went. At that first
meeting there were people from all walks of life,
and many of them were going up to the front
for recognition. I didn’t quite understand what
was happening at that point, but I did
understand that they were earning in excess of
£1,000 a month. It was then that I decided it
was time to plunge myself into this business.
I just decided I would never have a catalogue in
the house – they would always be with the
customers. Rosie and I joined in the October and
by March, we had earned enough to go on a
family holiday to EuroDisney. All those years we
couldn’t take the kids, because we couldn’t
afford it – we both cried on the way there,
because they were so excited.
That was really the way I got Rosie on board –
she could see the benefits of the business then.
At that moment, we both fell out of love with
our jobs and in love with Kleeneze. We decided
to set a target of becoming Bronze Executive
before we gave up work, but by doing so we
inadvertently qualified to Malaysia!

Money’s never been an issue for me – it’s the
lifestyle and what I call the fringe benefits that
are important. Because of Kleeneze, I was able
to take my daughter to school and then pick her
up in the afternoon. If there were any school
trips, she could always volunteer me to go on
them. If one of the kids was ever ill and had to
be picked up from school, we could just drop
everything and go.

I’ve often said if I ever won the lottery, I would
not quit Kleeneze. I would use some of the
money to help my team achieve their goals and
dreams. We have an incredible life. I’ve been
able to help people with financial difficulties,
who are worried about losing their homes etc.
We’re not special people, but we have an
awesome gift.”

“From the moment Kleeneze started in
Holland, we’ve been very active in the
business. From day one we had excellent sales
and customers are still very enthusiastic about
our products. In our first four weeks of the
business we sold over €1300 worth of
products and we’d already built a very
nice team.

After those first four weeks we hit the 21%
level - our very first cheque was €965. It was
more than Rhodé’s monthly salary and she
immediately decided to sack her boss. And all
this was achieved in just one Period,
working part-time around two jobs and a 10-
month-old daughter!

In our second Period, we qualified as Gold
Distributors. Our income grew to €1035 and
we also qualified for the Kleeneze European
Conference in Prague. All this after only eight
weeks in the business – absolutely amazing!
From the very first day we have been
consistent with our retail. It’s the foundation
for success! Even when Rhodé became
pregnant with our second child, it didn’t stop
her from working towards our goals. The day
after our son was born, Rhodé was doing her
follow-up calls again!

When we started, we had four other
Distributors active in our little village, but
because we were the only ones who returned
every six weeks consistently and provided
excellent service, customers only ordered from
us and all other Distributors gave up. Sales
were there for everybody, but it was the
service that made the difference.
We take good care of our customers and
therefore customers take good care of us. We
often get presents from them and we’ve built
some wonderful friendships with customers
over the past three-and-a-half years.
We give all our customers just that little extra
attention and they just love it! We put
products together for the elderly, sometimes
give a short demonstration on a product or
even just have a coffee with them!

Recently, we went on holiday and when we
got back home our answering machine had
several messages from customers on it. So
even while on holiday, we generated a little
over €100 worth of orders. How cool is that!”

Findel chairman stake tops 6%

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Findel’s chairman Keith Chapman spent almost £¾m on shares in the home shopping group following yesterday’s full year results, taking his holding past 6%. He bought 250,000 shares at just over 296p a go, bringing his stake in the firm, whose portfolio includes the Kleeneze cleaning products catalogues, to around 5.15m shares. Findel said Thursday it has made progress in the year but is “disappointed” with the final result in light of its previous expectations.

The group, which issued a profit warning in April saying year-end bad debts would increase at its Home Shopping arm, has seen its share price more than halve in the past year. “The economic effects of the credit crunch spread into customer's pockets affecting their payment behaviour and resulting in an increase in bad debt,” the company said at Thursday's full year results. All divisions have made positive sales progress in the first six weeks of the new year, with overall sales some 5% ahead, it said. Pre-tax profit for the year to March rose to £34m from £16.4m last year on turnover that increased 16% to £634.

who would be the first people you
told about it? Friends and family?
Or strangers?

Networking is the most natural thing you
can do and your warm market is the
most important group of people you can
approach. The people that you know,
trust you. Others might not. It also works
the other way around – with people you
know, you know their work ethic and
their track record, you know if they’re
right for your team.

When I started off, I made a list of
absolutely everyone I knew without
prejudging what they might say. Then I
spent two hours a day simply ringing
everyone. I routed around for phone
numbers for people I went to school with,
acquaintances, everyone. Some joined
right away, others took years before
they joined.

Jean and Mike Day took four years before
they said yes, but I kept on trying,
because I knew that they would love it
and it would change their lives. And it
has, all through their own work ethic.
Even my son Craig took 2 years to join
and then it was just for a bit of beer

A Kleeneze Success Story

When I found out about Kleeneze, I was at college part-time, in a part-time job and with a daughter to look after. Even an extra £50 a week would have been a life-saver. So you can imagine how I felt when after my first week I was came out with £200.

Two weeks later, I went to my first opportunity meeting. It was then that I really got my head around it all and realised the potential of the business if I started to sponsor. I spoke to my mum about it and she was the first one to join. By July 2007, I had ten members of my family in the business – even my Nan and Granddad were doing it!

Not all of them were keen in the beginning, but they could see how well I was
doing. I was drip feeding information to them all the time – leaving my cheques around! I didn’t have to really convince them – they knew what I had come from and could see that I would have never been able to afford things like a car otherwise. I still drip-feed information, though, to family members that haven’t joined yet. When I was in Cannes and Marrakech, they all got postcards!

There’s a great side to having your family involved in the business. I really believe that all of us being so close has made my business better.

2007 ever since we achieved Gold distributor in
September 2006. We'd qualified for Cannes and
had two distributorships in our team who'd seen us
do that and wanted to qualify Gold over the
summer months in order to go to Marrakech.
Helping them achieve their goals also achieved us
the double of Marrakech and Phuket!

Bronze is an important step for anybody planning
to build a long-term business. You see, achieving
Gold distributor can be done simply by being
consistent with your retail and helping and
supporting enough other distributors to retail
consistently, but to achieve Bronze requires you to
become competent at coaching others to build
their business.

Our best advice to get to Bronze would be to value
everybody, but rely on nobody. What we mean is,
that we always take responsibility for our own
business; always aim to be the best personal
recruiter in your team, and to keep your Personal
Sales Group bubbling at all times. Your PSG is your
nursery for new Gold distributors. Bronze is
achieved by developing the right people at the right
time, when they're ready and have goals in place
that will give them a big enough reason to do it. So
it's vital you know your team's goals and dreams.
If you're a new Distributor determined to be on the
Cruise, simply get to Gold as early as possible - it
can be done in 8 to 12 weeks from a standing start
if you give it all you've got. Then work closely with
your most enthusiastic team members. For
established Gold distributors looking to increase
their activity to qualify for the cruise or hoping to
win a Corsa, we would recommend saying to
everyone in your team: ‘We've done it ourselves -
got to Gold - who's up for following in our
footsteps? We know how it's done. We can show
you. Who's prepared to do what it takes?’ And see
who comes back to you positively. We guarantee
there'll be one or two surprises!”

An Interview with Kleeneze's Michael Khatkar

Whether you’ve been in the business two minutes or two decades, it’s more than likely that you have heard the name Michael Khatkar. The Head of Network Development has been working with Kleeneze Distributors for over eight years and as a result is one of the most well-known faces (not to mention his vocal abilities!) of the business.

So, as we embark on what is going to be our best year ever, EWB decided to catch up with the man himself to find out all the news.

Can you tell us what your job entails?
I am basically the link between the Kleeneze Head Office and the Network. I’m there to support teams wherever they need it and to really maintain a high profile, so both the voices of the Network are fed back to Head Office and that the corporate news is relayed to Distributors in much the same way. That is why you’ll find me speaking at a lot of the Network meetings.
As a consequence, the feedback that I get from Distributors allows me to see how and where we can develop incentives.
I’m then responsible for writing suitable critera for all incentives, as well as tracking who has qualified for the Conferences and the cars. When it comes to Conferences, both here and abroad, I chose and direct all the speakers, which is where my close link to the Network comes in handy!

We’ve heard a rumour that 2008 is going to be gr8. Why?
This is definitely a fantastic time to be in the business. We now have more incentives than ever and they are easier to achieve than ever. For example, to qualify for the Caribbean Cruise in 2009, all you need do is reach the Bronze Executive level and hold it for two more periods. And there’s the Corsa incentive on top of that.

You’re one of the only ones who has been on the Club Med 2. What’s so gr8 about it?
I’ve witnessed eight launches of the Spring Destinations and I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve never seen one that has stirred so much excitement and emotion in the Network. Everyone’s buzzing and everyone’s talking about it. I called it the ‘Ultimate Destination’ at a meeting once and the nickname has stuck, but I really believe it is. Just the whole exclusivity of it makes it one of the best we’ve ever done.

You’ve been through the whole transitional period with Kleeneze. What has that been like?
No one ever said that it was going to be easy and naturally there were going to be some issues with a move of such a massive scale – but on the whole it went extremely well and the support from the Network during that time was just incredible. However, now that the whole transitional process is over and the foundations have been laid, we can start focusing on the year ahead.

What will you be doing more of in 2008?
Communication and support. This is the time for growth and we all need to push forward and do whatever it takes to make this business the best that it can be. We will be creating incentives that are available for everybody and then helping them to achieve them.

What should we (Distributors) be doing in 2008?
Deciding on what your personal goals are and keeping on track to achieve them. It’s also important, though, to sharpen your ability to get people to understand why this business is so great. Encourage people to reach their goals and you will reach yours without trying.
For new people, it’s important to look around the Network at the thousands of success stories that are produced every year. Success leaves clues – it’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s really true – you only need look around to see it.

“This was my first Conference. I joined Kleeneze three months ago, after
doing quite a bit of research. My wife really didn’t understand and kept on
telling me to go out and get a ‘real job’! Without this Conference, I was never
going to convince her!

On Saturday, I had to drag her there. She said that she’d stay for about an
hour and then she was going to go shopping. But she was totally blown

“In May 2006, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was therefore
recommended that I cease work altogether, including my Kleeneze business.

WE BEAT THE BAILIFFS!

“After going from sales job to sales job –
always being promised the ‘high earnings’
that were never actually achievable, it
seemed that Sam and I would have to go
back to our regular jobs and simply scrape
by somehow. As our previous jobs were
commission only, though, we were quickly
losing money and not making it.

Things became pretty bad for us financially.
So bad, that at the time I only had £29 in my
bank account. I was getting bailiff visits
regularly, as well as receiving bills I couldn’t
pay and telephone calls demanding payment
that I had to ignore – it’s definitely not a good
place to be.

We were getting desperate to make
money fast and, after searching for jobs on
the Internet, we responded to an online ad
for Kleeneze.

In all honesty, I was set to join a different
network marketing company that I had been
shown previously – but compared to
Kleeneze, it didn’t have the fantastic appeal
that this opportunity has. In fact, it seemed
like it was trying to copy Kleeneze in some
way, but didn’t quite make the grade. What
attracted us more to Kleeneze is the fact that
there is no selling involved, something which
all other network marketing companies seem

Home retailers see festive sales rise

In the 39 weeks to December 28, sales in Findel’s home shopping division rose 32 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Patrick Jolly, chief executive, said Findel’s (Kleeneeze's parent company) online presence, personalised product range and willingness to provide credit were crucial to its growth. The retailer, which had revenues of about £587m in 2007, also sells educational and healthcare products, and those divisions contributed to overall sales growth of 23 per cent.

The forecast for new jobs in 2008 is the worst in a decade as private firms recruit fewer staff and the public sector cuts back, it is being claimed.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development says in its annual end-of-year report that next year looks like being "easily the worst" for work since Labour came to power in 1997.
Employment will increase by just 0.25% over the next 12 months, well down on rises recorded in the past few years, according to the institute.

Its Chief Economist John Philpott said: "In the early part of the decade, periods of slower growth in private sector employment were masked by relatively rapid growth in public sector jobs.

"A downward trend in public sector employment in the past two years has in turn been more than offset by rising numbers of private sector jobs.

"But 2008 will be the first year for a decade that the engine of job creation will be spluttering right across the economy.

"With higher fuel costs and food prices set to raise the cost of living in the first half of the year the squeeze on real incomes experienced by many workers in 2007 will continue to bite in 2008."

He added: "Many HR professionals will be dusting off redundancy manuals in the coming months to re-discover best practice on trimming staffing levels.

"But unlike previous bouts of large-scale job shedding in the early 1980s and early 1990s, which tended to fall relatively heavily on older staff, redundancy practice in 2008 will have to take care not to fall foul of recently-introduced age discrimination legislation."

Mel and Irene Wilson were looking forward to their looming retirement with slight apprehension.

"We were in our mid-50s and our private pension arrangements were not up to much - and we all know the state provision isn't great either," says Mel, now 62. But a business card left on Mel's windscreen changed all that.

"The card asked if I was interested in making extra money.

"I called up to find out more and received an information pack."

It was Kleeneze, the catalogue shopping franchise which sells household cleaning and health and beauty products through a network of independent distributors.

"I'd heard of them but didn't know how they operated," says Mel from Penrith in Cumbria.
After calling up and asking lots more questions he decided to give it a go.

"Irene was furious. She told me in no uncertain terms that she hadn't married a door-to-door brush salesman.

"I still went ahead and she stopped speaking to me," laughs Mel.

It was 1999 when Mel invested £125 to start up his Kleeneze business - and earned £536 in his first two weeks.

After almost two months of a rather tense atmosphere at home Irene finally admitted that the business was working and decided to get involved too.

"Now, almost eight years later, we rarely earn less than £5,000 per month and we should make not far short of £100,000 this year.

"We run our own business from home with no boss and we have total freedom to work the hours that suit us," adds Mel.

Along the way the couple have been on all-expenses-paid trips to Australia, Budapest and Monte Carlo and last year they were presented with a brand-new BMW as part of Kleeneze's incentive scheme.

"Anyone with a good work ethic and some ambition can succeed at this," says Mel.

Are the couple still worried about their pension now?

LONDON (Reuters) - The number of Britons losing their homes because of bad debt hit an eight-year high in the first half of 2007 as rising interest rates push more and more borrowers over the edge despite double-digit house price growth.

But economists said the situation in Britain was unlikely to add significantly to U.S. housing market problems which have rattled global financial markets over fears about bad debts and the onset of a swift and severe slowdown.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders said home repossessions soared by almost a third in the first half of this year compared to a year ago to 14,000 -- the highest since 1999 and roughly 77 homes a day.

Official figures also showed personal insolvencies at near record levels, with the equivalent of nearly 12 people an hour succumbing to bad debt in the three months to the end of June.

"The numbers make unpleasant reading and it is going to get worse," said Alan Clarke, an economist at BNP Paribas.

The Bank of England has hiked borrowing costs five times to 5.75 percent since last August and is expected to push interest rates up to 6 percent by the end of the year in order to bring above-target inflation back under control.

Nor will Britons be able to rely on fast-rising house prices.

"With the housing market slowing into 2008 and interest rates expected to hit 6 percent, homeowners slipping behind with their repayments may be left stranded, unable to sell their way out of trouble," said David Stubbs, senior economist at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

While Britain's robust housing market is expected to cool and repossessions to rise, few are predicting that conditions will deteriorate to the levels seen in the early 1990s -- the last time there was a crash.

In 1991, homes were being repossessed at almost three times the rate as they are now.

Nonetheless, concern is rising because two million homeowners over the next 18 months will be coming out of fixed-rate mortgage agreements to find themselves having to renegotiate terms with interest rates 125 basis points higher.

"The pressure on many households is set to increase significantly, given that the cumulative 125 basis points rise in interest rates enacted so far by the Bank of England since August 2006 is yet to fully feed through to impact on borrowers," said Howard Archer, an economist at Global Insight.

POSITIVE SIGNS

But there were some bright spots in the latest data. The growth of personal insolvencies appears to have peaked for now.

Following the record high numbers of insolvencies hit at the end of last year, the number of people succumbing to bad debt has fallen for two consecutive quarters -- down about 8.1 percent in the second quarter from the first to 26,956.

The Ministry of Justice said mortgage possession court orders in England and Wales in the second quarter of 2007 were 3 percent lower on the year, numbering 21,514, and nearly half of these were suspended.

Economists also point out mortgage delinquencies in the United States -- where subprime mortgage fears have sent shockwaves through global markets -- are outstripping those in Britain.

"Further still, while U.S. homeowners were facing the crunch from falling house price inflation, UK homeowners are still being cushioned by double digit gains in house prices," BNP Paribas' Clarke said.
